Malaysian Consul General Meets Speaker Sindh Assembly; Discusses Promotion of Parliamentary and Economic Cooperation

Consul General of Malaysia in Karachi, His Excellency Mohd Yunus bin Ibrahim, called on Speaker of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh Syed Awais Qadir Shah at his office at the Provincial Assembly of Sindh. The meeting focused on bilateral relations between Pakistan and Malaysia, parliamentary cooperation, trade, investment, tourism, and ways to further strengthen bilateral ties.

Welcoming the Malaysian Consul General, Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah recalled his meeting with his predecessor during the 7th CPA Asia Regional Conference and 2nd Joint CPA Asia & South-East Asia Regional Conference, hosted by the Provincial Assembly of Sindh.

Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah said that the two sides had remained in regular contact and added that he had also met the Speaker of the Malaysian Parliament during the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Cape Town.

The Malaysian Consul General said that his posting in Pakistan was his first assignment in the country and his third overseas posting. He said that he had arrived in Pakistan about a month ago and described Pakistan as a highly energetic country, appreciating the hospitality, warmth, and enthusiasm of the Pakistani people.

Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah invited the Consul General to visit different parts of Sindh, particularly Sukkur. He highlighted Sukkur’s historical and geographical importance, its role in connecting Sindh with other provinces, as well as its airport, railway connectivity, road network, and strong industrial base. He also briefed the Consul General about the population, geographical features, and economic characteristics of various districts of Sindh, highlighting the province’s unique combination of desert areas, fertile agricultural regions, and industrial zones.

Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah said that Sukkur and other cities of Sindh offered significant opportunities for economic cooperation, trade, and investment with Malaysia. He suggested that the Malaysian Consulate explore business opportunities in major cities, including Sukkur and Hyderabad, and strengthen engagement with the respective chambers of commerce.

The Malaysian Consul General said that promoting economic cooperation between Pakistan and Malaysia was among his key priorities. Referring to his recent meeting with the business community at the Korangi Association of Trade & Industry (KATI), he said that various avenues for economic cooperation had been explored. He added that Malaysia’s economic division was also looking to expand its international economic engagement and identify viable business and investment opportunities.

The meeting also covered opportunities for promoting tourism. The Speaker recalled his visit to Malaysia around 13–14 years ago and appreciated his experience of travelling across different parts of the country. Both sides discussed possibilities for enhancing tourism links and people-to-people contacts between Pakistan and Malaysia.

Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah also briefed the Consul General about various initiatives of the Government of Sindh, particularly the World Livestock Expo, and highlighted opportunities for Malaysian businesses and relevant stakeholders to participate in such programmes. The Consul General expressed keen interest in the expo, while the Speaker assured him that he and his team would be invited to participate in the next edition hosted by the Government of Sindh.

With regard to parliamentary relations, Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah proposed the establishment of Parliamentary Friendship Groups between the Provincial Assembly of Sindh and the Parliament of Malaysia. He noted that he had also proposed the initiative during his meeting with the Malaysian Consul General’s predecessor.

Consul General Mohd Yunus bin Ibrahim briefed the Speaker on the economic importance of Selangor, highlighting its significant contribution to Malaysia’s GDP and its status as an important economic and port hub. He also explained Malaysia’s unique constitutional monarchy and the system under which certain states are governed by Sultans.

Both sides exchanged views on the parliamentary systems of Pakistan and Malaysia, including their respective bicameral legislatures and the functioning of their parliamentary institutions.

The Consul General also briefed the Speaker about Malaysian companies operating in Pakistan and expressed his commitment to further expanding their presence and activities in the country.

Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah said that the Provincial Assembly of Sindh would continue to play its role in strengthening relations between Pakistan and Malaysia. He invited the Malaysian Consul General to attend a session of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh and extended an invitation to participate in future events and initiatives organised in Karachi and other cities of Sindh.

His Excellency Mohd Yunus bin Ibrahim thanked the Speaker for his valuable time and hospitality and expressed his commitment to further strengthening Pakistan–Malaysia relations at the parliamentary, economic, and people-to-people levels.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah presented the Malaysian Consul General with a commemorative shield of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh, a Sindhi cap, and Ajrak.
