I am to state that the Provincial Assembly of Sindh in its sitting held on Friday, the 17th September, 2021 has passed the following Resolution moved by Mr. Saeed Ghani, Minister for Labour & Human Resources and Information, Sindh:

 

The House condemns the Federal Government’s proposed Pakistan Media Development Authority (PMDA) Bill. The proposed PMDA appears to be endeavor by the Federal Government which reflects its anti-press and anti-freedom of the speech narrative. The Government attempts to place restrictions on free media and dissent in the name of regulating the media via introducing such regimes. The PMDA is aimed against the freedom of expression and press freedom as guaranteed under Article 19 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Once the PMDA is established, it will be a step towards hindering the media freedoms and taking control of the press by Federal Government. The bill is an attempt to control the digital and print media by a single entity i.e. PMDA irrespective of the fact that the two are separate in every respect. We condemn the closure of Media Gallery at National Assembly.

 

The House demands that the proposed bill be withdrawn forthwith so that the independence of media and press can be maintained.
