(a)   Is it a fact that there is any plan to increase wheat storage capacity in the province;

(b)   If answer to (a) above be in affirmative, the details thereof?

ANSWER

Mr. Mukesh Kumar Chawla, Minister for Food:

Yes it is a fact.

The Food Department, Operates State Trading Scheme of Wheat and procures huge stocks of wheat on yearly basis which gradually increases due to rapid growth of population in the Provinces.

Presently, the Food Department operates two on-going ADP Schemes throughout the Province which were approved during the year 2016-17. The details are as under: -

(i)     ADP SCHEME No.566-CONSTRUCTION OF OPEN PLATFORMS / PLINTH FOR GRAIN STORAGE IN SINDH.

The present capacity of storage of wheat stands to be around 0.700 MMT. This is extremely insufficient and creates serious threat to the wheat stocks to sustain the weather vagaries. Thus, the department requires extensive storage capacity in order to secure the wheat stocks being a perishable commodity.

The constructions of Platforms/Plinths for grain storage would certainly enable the department to protect the huge wheat stocks worth billions of rupees especially during the periods of monsoon. The scheme has been envisaged for construction of ‘285’ open platforms / plinths for grain storages throughout the Province. This would factually increase the space of storage approximately to the tune of 1,425,000 Wheat Bags.

Region wise details of development work on ADP-566 are as under:-
