*789. MS. NUSRAT SEHER ABBASI: Will the Minister for Agriculture be pleased to state:-
(a) Is it a fact that summer crop guava get ripen on trees and deserted due to unavailability of cold storage and 35% guava and tomato crop gets destroyed;
(b) If answer to (a) above be in the affirmative, the steps taken by the government in this regard?
ANSWER
MR. ALI NAWAZ KHAN MAHAR, Minister for Agriculture:
(a) Yes, Guava & Tomatoes crops ripened on the trees/plants suffer post harvest losses due to improper handling.
(b) The Government of Sindh, Agriculture Department proposed a project for Establishment of Control Atmosphere Stores and Cold Storage in Sindh in the ADP 2008-09. However later on it was desired that such type of projects may be implemented through Public Private Partnership (PPP) basis. Therefore the project was referred to PPP Cell, Finance Department for further processing.
To minimize the post harvest losses growers have been advised through Extension wing of the Agriculture Department for proper harvesting technique through field days, seminars print and electronic media.

Name/number of sugar mills exist in district Sukkur along with the production capacity of sugar in metric tons in the same?
ANSWER

There is only one sugar mill in District Sukkur.

(a) Is it a fact that some rare varieties of dates are not cultivated in the province;
(b) If answer to (a) above is affirmative, measures taken by agriculture research labs to make them cultivated?
ANSWER
MR. ALI NAWAZ KHAN MAHAR, Minister for Agriculture:
(a) Yes.
(b) There are more than 300 cultivars of dates in Khairpur. Major cultivars grown in Sindh are Aseel, Karbalin, Fasli, Dedhi, Khupro, Kachoowari, Began, Mithri, Bhedir, Khar, Toto, Autaqin and Asul Khurmo. Only Aseel & Karbalain are good enough to be promoted as International Cultivars.
For promotion of world renowned dates i.e. Ajwa, Amber and Safawi are under test and trials at Date Palm Research Institute, Khairpur.
In addition world famous date Mejdool and Barhee are also tested in Sindh. These varieties are rain susceptible and found less productive.
*2314. DR. SEEMA ZIA: Will the Minister for Agriculture be pleased to state:-
(a) Is it a fact that the Minister assured on the floor of the House to take measures to have a fruit festival in Karachi by inviting international exporters;
(b) If answer to (a) above is affirmative, the steps taken to ensure the same?
ANSWER
MR. ALI NAWAZ KHAN MAHAR, Minister for Agriculture:
(a) Yes.
(b) Agriculture Department, Government of Sindh will be organizing Mango Exhibition at Expo Center, Karachi in June, 2015. Mainly local exporters, dignitaries and foreign counselors will be invited. Moreover, invitations will also be extended to the foreign importers for the promotion of export of fruits/mangoes.
Finance Department, Government of Sindh has been requested to allocate Rs. 3.00 million for the purpose. Invitation letters and arrangements will be made in due course of time.

Number of species of sugar cane presently being cultivated in the province?
ANSWER
MR. ALI NAWAZ KHAN MAHAR, Minister for Agriculture:
There are two species of sugarcane generally cultivated in the Sindh Province i.e. Saccharum officinarum and saccharum barberi.
