*1156. MS. NUSRAT SEHER ABBASI: Will the Minister for Wildlife be pleased to state:-
(a) Is it a fact that rare pedigree deer, white footed antelope, partridge, bustards and peacocks are decreasing in Thar and staff of the department is involved in hunting of the same;
(b) If answer to (a) above is affirmative, the steps taken in this regard?
ANSWER
MR. GAYAN CHAND, Minister for Wildlife:
(a) Fact is that rare pedigree Deer, white footed Antelope, Partridges, Bustards and Peacocks are not decreasing in Thar and are well protected under Sindh Wildlife Protection Ordinance, 1972. Bustard is a migratory bird used to come annually in Thar area during winter season. The other species are local and their population is satisfactory due to better protection and successful breeding every year. The question regarding involvement of staff in hunting of the same is not correct. The Wildlife staff in Tharparkar is performing their duties despite limited resources for better protection of Wildlife with the result that wildlife species are increasing. The estimated population of above species in Tharparkar District is given as under:-
1. Deer
|
6000 Nos.
|
2. Antelope/Blue bull
|
250 Nos.
|
3. Partridges
|
40000 Nos.
|
4. Houbara Bustards
|
150 Nos. coming every year
|
5. Peacocks
|
98000 Nos.
|
(b) Steps Taken By Department:-
· Anti poaching measures have been taken against illegal hunting and poaching of wild animals.
· Improvement of habitat through raising of fodder.
· To promote education and awareness amongst general public for information of wildlife and its protection.
· During the years 2011, 2012 and 2013 ND Vaccine of 20,000, 75,000 and 98,900 doses have provided to the Peacocks in 150,627 and 705 villages respectively.
· Vaccination campaign have been started this year from 15, January, 2014.
· Medicines like multi vitamin, antibiotic, skim milk, glucose and paracetamole are also provided to the Peacocks.
· Pamphlets and Banners have been distributed to the villages for awareness purposes.
· Samples have been collected by the poultry doctors for disease diagnosis and proper treatment.
Four teams of Wildlife Department and Poultry Department were constituted for providing medicines to the Peacocks and collecting data of death/healthy Peacocks.
