(a)   Is it a fact that during June, 2013 many animals including Peacocks were died of a strange disease at Nagar Parkar;

(b)   If answer to (a) above be in affirmative, the details thereof including the name of disease?

 ANSWER

MR. GAYAN CHAND, Minister for Wildlife:

(a)   No, it is not fact that during June, 2013 many animals including Peacocks were died of a strange disease at Nagar Parkar.

(b)   Only three Peacocks were found dead in the Nagar Parkar during June 2013 due to natural death and rising temperature. No more mortality is reported in Nagar Parkar area up till now.

 

*384. MS. NAHEED BEGUM: Will the Minister for Wildlife be pleased to state:-

(a)   Number of blind dolphin fishes caught at Sukkur Barrage in River Indus during January, 2008 to December, 2012 and number of live/ dead fishes out of above as well as reasons of their death?

(b)   Number of fishes died and number of fishes left alone in the sea?

 ANSWER

MR. GAYAN CHAND, Minister for Wildlife:

(a)   Dolphins are not willfully caught in river Indus during January, 2008 to December, 2012. However Dolphins die after entanglement in fishing nets put by fishermen community. About 46 Dead Indus Dolphins are reported from 2008 to 2012 between Guddu to Sukkur barrages.

The reasons for the death of Blind Dolphin are as under:-

(i)    Use of Pesticides.

(ii)   Entanglement in Fishing Nets.

(iii)  Water Shortage.

(iv)   Water Pollution

(v)    Stranding into Canals.

(b)   Indus Blind Dolphins are only found in river Indus not in the Sea. Presently 949 dolphins are surviving in river Indus between Guddu to Kotri barrages (692 Kms).

 *417. MS. HEER SOHO: Will the Minister for Wildlife be pleased to state:-

(a)   Is it a fact that Peacocks disease has not been controlled as yet at Nagar Parkar and surroundings;

(b)   If answer to (a) above be in the affirmative, the reasons thereof;

(c)    Is it a fact that the government has started any Peacocks vaccination;

(d)   If answer to (c) above be in the affirmative, the details thereof including the procedure of their treatment?

 ANSWER

MR. GAYAN CHAND, Minister for Wildlife:

(a)   No, the disease has been controlled at Nagar Parker and surroundings through adopting preventive measures i.e. vaccination, iscation sick peacocks, providing safe drinking water and monitoring through vigilance teams of veterinary and wildlife staff.

(b)   Yes, Government of Sindh has started ND virus vaccination for Peacocks, since March to August, 2013.

(c)    Since March to August, 15, 2013, 700 villages of taluka Diplo, Mithi, Islamkot, Nagarparkar and Chachro are surveyed and more than 55000 peacocks are vaccinated with the help of local communities veterinary doctors and wildlife staff.

Vaccines and medicines are give with following dosage.

(1)  One vial of N.D vaccine for 20 Peacocks is mixed with one liter of drinking water put in the pots for the peacocks.

(2)  One gram Lysovit Powder (Multivitamin) is mixed with one liter of drinking water for peacocks.

(a)   Is it a fact that new recruitments have been made in Wildlife department during 2008-13 upto June;

(b)   If answer to (a) above be in the affirmative, the details thereof?

 ANSWER

MR. GAYAN CHAND, Minister for Wildlife:

(a)   Yes, it is a fact that new recruitment has been made in Wildlife Department during the period from 2008 to 2013.

(b)   Total appointment recruitment made during the period in different caders and scales from BS-2 to BS-14.

Name of districts where Indus Blind Dolphin is found along with the estimated number of the same as well as the measures taken by the Government for the improvement of the same?

 ANSWER

 However it is not possible to given the estimated number of Dolphins District wise because Dolphins move upstream and downstream and there is no boundary of districts in the flowing water of river Indus. According to the results of comprehensive survey, conducted in 2011 by Sindh Wildlife Department total number of Dolphins found in river Indus from Guddu to Kotri barrages is 949.

 Steps taken by Government of Sindh, (Sindh Wildlife Department for the conservation of Indus blind Dolphin in Sindh)

(1)   Declaration of Dolphin Reserve 192 Km in 1974.

(2)   Regular Population Survey from 1974 to 2011.

(3)   Posting of trained Wildlife Staff at Dolphin Reserve.

(4)   Education and Awareness.

(5)   Rescues of Indus Blind Dolphin from Guddu and Sukkur Barrage canals.

(6)   Establishment of Dolphin information centre and field offices at Guddu, Kandhkot and Sukkur.

 *424. MS. HEER SOHO: Will the Minister for Wildlife be pleased to state:-

Steps taken for the improvement of marine turtle along with the area where they are found as well as the number of the same?

 ANSWER

MR. GAYAN CHAND, Minister for Wildlife:

 Steps Taken for Improvement of Marine Turtles.

Ø  All species of marine turtles including Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) and Olive Ridley Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) visiting Pakistani beaches are declared “Protected” under Sindh Wildlife Protection Ordinance, 1972.

Ø  Conservation, management, research and educational activities are underway by Sindh Wildlife Department since October, 1979 at Hawkes Bay and Sandspit Karachi.

Ø  Three turtle hatcheries have been established (two at Sandspit and one at Hawkes Bay) where turtle eggs are transplanted in the hatcheries for hatching and protection from predators. So far 23,46,000 eggs are transplanted in the hatcheries and 755,000 hatchlings have been released into the sea from 1979 to 2012.

Ø  Adult turtles visiting the turtle beaches for egg laying are tagged to monitor their migratory route/pattern and egg laying frequency.

Ø  Satellite transmitters were installed on four green turtles to monitor their migratory route in seawater during 2001 and 2006.

Ø  Marine turtle laboratory is established at Hawkes Bay for research and education/awareness of the masses.

Ø  Pakistan is one of the 25th signatory states in world, who signed Marine Turtle Memorandum of Understanding (Moll) in the Indian Ocean South East Asian region in 2004.

Ø  Guided tours are arranged for tourists and students for turtle watching at night during the months from August to December every year.

Ø  Education in masses through press and electronic media is an important objective of the project.
