 *10642. MR. ARIF MUSTAFA JATOI: Will the Minister for Wildlife be pleased to state:-

(a)   Is it a fact that excessive withdrawals of water from Keenjhar lake is damaging wildlife living there;

(b)   If answer to (a) above be in the affirmative, the steps being taken in this regard?

ANSWER

DR. DAYA RAM, Minister for Wildlife:

(a)      It is not a fact that, excessive water is being withdrawn from Keenjhar Lake, but only sanctioned quantity of water (650 GM) 1200 cusics, is being supplied to Karachi Water Board from Keenjhar Lake through Gujjo Canal. While Irrigation Department is taking water for irrigation purposes direct from K.B feeder through link Canal, not directly from Keenjhar Lake. Therefore, it is not correct that excessive withdrawal of water from Keenjhar Lake is damaging the Wildlife.

(b)      Steps have been taken by Sindh Wildlife Department to ensure the storage of maximum quantity of water in Keenjhar Lake for the ecological balance and better environment for Wildlife species and their habitat.
